Heartbroken!

Not Our Best Day

We thought we had a meeting with Fred’s new hepatologist this morning.  Instead of her coming in the exam room, we were greeted by the new Director of KUMed's Liver Transplant program and one of the surgeons.

The short story is they had a change in their program with different outcomes and it seems they are going for a more conservative approach.  They let us know Fred’s case is now deemed too risky for them and he is no longer a candidate here.

On top of this, Fred broke a tooth and the poor guy is the middle of some dental work to get a crown to repair it -- paid for and being manufactured now -- scheduled to wrap up next week.  Once that process is finished, we will make arrangements to come home.
Not sure what the next move will be.  Thank you for all of your love and support.  It will be so very good to be home.

  1. Oh Karen. I am so very, very sorry. Devastating. Sorry all those prayers didn't do the trick...yet. They continue.

  5. Thanks everyone for your posts, texts, calls, email. I cried and cried and am done with that. Time now to assess the options. It's a rough blow and we can't make sense of it all but we are coming home! And we are so very happy about that.

  8. Been a while since a comment here. I check this regularly. Sorry to here it's one step forward and two back. I'm in the middle of dental hell myself. In the process of bone graft and sinus lift for upper implants. Nothing as with you, where life is on the line. Have a safe trip home. Hopefully UCLA will be kind to you.

    1. Thanks for the kind words Ron. We are applying to several other Midwestern facilities, so we'll see what happens. UCLA is always kind to me, but with the high demand here there is only so much they can do. Sorry about the dental issues. I know how painful that can be. At least I'm home again where I can ride my bikes.
