Fred got a couple of calls yesterday that were good for his spirits. First, our friend's young daughter called specifically to cheer him up and ease his boredom. They had a couple of good laughs and her mom even chimed in. Well done, Savanna and Lisa! Then, later in the evening our Burbank neighbor and friend, Grant, called to check in and chat. Two old guys talkin' about the weather . . . seriously. Fred was so genuinely glad to hear from you, Grant. Made him feel like we were back home.
Well, these calls made me think I needed to post an update but it seemed there really was not much going on. Yesterday, my plan for today was to work most of the day and then blog tomorrow or Sunday. Well, the best laid plans...
We are presently at the ER at KUMed. They are running tests and say they will likely admit Fred to the hospital while they try and figure out what is going on.
After a few days of intestinal trouble and a bit of a cough with some phlegm, Fred started to run a fever Wednesday night. It climbed a little yesterday but spiked this morning at 100.9. We called in to his transplant coordinator as soon as clinic opened. She told us to head to the ER and she would let them know Fred was on his way. When we arrived, they brought Fred to a room right away and discovered the fever had already climbed to 101.8.
He seems to be quite popular with lots of traffic coming in and out of the room. So far they are not quite sure what is going on but they are running a bunch of tests. Blood tests: CBC, lactic acid for sepsis, and tests to check his liver function, blood culture to be sure no blood infection, ekg, abdominal CT to rule out a cyst. He is dehydrated and bummed but is in good hands.
We are praying for a positive and speedy resolution so he is in top shape when he gets a his new liver.
Thank you all for your caring and continued support. I will update when I know more.

Thanks for posting. Praying hard!!!!!!

Big hugs! Can't wait for that lunch when we get back. ♡♡
DeleteThe latest:
ReplyDeleteThings are looking better! I managed to find my way back to the apartment on my own. (Its only a mile, but I am seriously geographiclly challenged y'all!) Fred still has some malaise this morning but the fever broke yesterday. Yay! Some complaints of cruddy food and no sleep last night, but these are no big surprise. I brought a bunch of fresh fruit, a hummus sammy, and a yogurt they have labeled and refrigerated for later.
I am praying this was just dehydration, but the good peeps at KUMED are not agreeing and they are keeping him until the blood culture and some respiratory viral tests come back on Monday.
That works too. It will give him a clean bill of health before the transplant.
Update on Fred - So Far So Good:
ReplyDeleteMost of the tests have come back and they have all been negative. No parasites. No colitis. None of the deadly intestinal bacteria. No fungus or flu. Negative. Fred's fever is gone. There is one more test scheduled for tomorrow. If there still is no growth in the blood culture from Friday, Fred will be discharged. If everything comes back clear the doctors are thinking he just had a bug that hit him hard due to his immunosuppression. Fred has been a trooper and says he will actually find it encouraging to go forward having ruled these things out.
Gotta love that man!
I love you both...so glad to follow your journey as I feel we are all together...great idea for this blog! Sending lots of love and prayers. ❤️
ReplyDeleteThanks Sheri! Things have changed since last night. At about 10pm our time Fred's fever creepd back into the picture and he started up with the chills. Fever hit 99.8 this morning. Not sure if he is going home today or not. :-(
DeleteShit! Very frustrating for you both!
ReplyDeleteYes. We got the respiratory test back this morning and it was positive. Not sure how this all plays out or where he came into contact but he tested positive for a viral infection - repiratory. His fever is over 100 now and has not responded to tylenol. Waiting for doctors to tell us the plan. Crud!!!
DeleteYour taco Monday ladies are thinking about you guys and send prayers and good wishes. Thank you for the updates.

DeleteDang that virus. Thinking of you both with huge love.
ReplyDeleteStupid virus.
DeletePraying for the virus to clear out of Fred's system soon! Love & miss you so much, Karen. Seeing lots of cold/cough/laryngitis around here. #WinterStinksSometimes
ReplyDeleteOh thank you Frankie. Yes. Lots of bugs going around and I feel bad for everyone who has been hit r his cold season. We had to run all over the place to get here and to get settled so who knows how he got it.
DeleteSending love and good thoughts to you and Fred. You both are so much in my prayers.
ReplyDeletePrayers so very much appreciated and I just love you for posting for let us know. I really am missing everyone.
DeleteHe is Sprung!
ReplyDeleteFred's fever came down again and the doctors felt there was more risk to keeping him in the hospital than him coming home. So he is now back at the apartment. He is closely monitored, nourished, and hydrated by moi.
I can say with certainty that KUMED is one of the best hospitals Fred has been in and find it reassuring. From the ER to the floor he was on,to the protocol, and the people, everything was impressive. We cannot thank the kind and attentive nurses and aids enough for making Fred feel like he was #1 when we knew there were plenty of patients who needed care too.
Such good news! I miss you both!
ReplyDeleteI am so glad to hear that! Sending lots of love..Kelsi sends a big kiss to both of you.❤️
ReplyDeleteOh thats great.
